No horse can match up to an appaloosa. Bred by the Nez Perce, a tribe of Native Americans who inhabited the northwest, the appaloosa has the most heart, and spots, of any horse in the world.

The appaloosa came around in the 1700's and changed the Nez Perce tribes for the better. They became great hunters because of the mobility the horses provided.

The word Appaloosa came from "A Palouse Horse". It was shortened by the Spanish soldiers to "appaloosa horse", and is now know simply as "the appaloosa".

The appaloosa aided Chief Joseph in his attempted escape to Canada. The horses blended in to their surroundings and understood when to hold still and when to go all out, making it almost impossible for cavalry men on grade horses to catch them. The appaloosas were bred to be very hardy, and could gallop for long distances and travel through the entire night without strain. This made the cavalry's job to catch the Native Americans even harder. Calvary horses just couldn't compete with the appaloosa. Chief Joseph finally surrendered, just miles from Canada, but it was not because of his appaloosa.

The Nez Perce surrendered their horses to the cavalry, and the quality the tribes once had in their horses was lost, but was recovered through selective breeding years later.

The appaloosa has a reputation of being tough, and they live up to it. An appaloosa by the name of Kawliga Prince, affectionately known as Clyde, showed that he could deal with anything. Clyde came down with a mild colic one day. Three days later, Clyde wasn't any better. His owners took him to Cornell Veterinary School as a last resort. Nearly 75% of his throat and 70% of his stomach had ulcers. He had shown no signs of illness until three days prior. Ultimately, he recovered, and lived until the age of 25.

Appaloosas today are wonderful horses and have a wonderful temperament. They are strong, calm and willing, and great as a child's first horse, or a top dressage or event horse.

I wouldn't agree on an appaloosa having the most heart, as a few others wouldn't (appaloosa not being the favored type of horse) but it is true that they are very easy going horses that are very willing to do just about anything. :) Great article.

In real life i own 2 paints, a spotted draft, and yes..an appaloosa. teh most easy going is far from the appy and he is in competition w/ one of the paints for most attitude and personality since both can open up their own stall doors and let everyone else loose as well (10 horses total)...lets jus say i'm not an appy fan for numerous reasons of my own so i cant exactly agree on most of how you described them (no offense to you of course) but i will say that from what i know appys and paints are teh most stubborn and multi-personalitied horses prolly in the world... :) happy reading!!!!!!

I own a appaloosa yearling stud in real life and he is the best. some ppl may say they are crazy but mine isnt. he is a sweetheart and will let my 1 yr old son on his back with no comlaints. some appies are crazy but that im guessing depends on breeding and handling. my colt will do anything for me and i cant wait to start training him to be ridden next year

14.The Appaloosa horse...

It is not fair to generalize about any breed of horse, or stick them into a specific stereotype. However this article, I feel, has given an honest representation of the Appaloosa breed. Most Appaloosas are, in my experience, an in-your-pocket type of horse. Great job! Keep up the amazing work.
15.red roan Appaloosas
by Star Prancer (1606 days and 4 hours)
I have a mustang in real life. She's a red roan appaloosa. Star is a very strong horse. Not to mention smart. She might get her appaloosa color from desendents of the Nez Perce. She is a wild horse from Nevada. You never know.
I really like this artical. It's very inforamative.

Well, to know an Appy is to love them. We all have a favorite breed, lets try to keep in mind that they all have a bad side, and try to focus on the positive.
