The American Bashkir Curly

You may have heard of the American Bashkir Curly horse, and all you probably know is it has a unique curly coat. But actually, the Bashkir Curly has lots of history behind it. The Curly’s origin was set to the United States, but it actually isn’t totally correct. Their origins are ancient and it isn’t the only curly horse in the world, because the Lokai horse has a similar coat wave that may mean the two breeds have some relation.

The Curly was discovered in America in the year 1898, despite the origins. It was said that some horseback-riders were traveling along in the Nevada (USA) mountain range and noticed three curly horses, and supposedly all Curly’s can be traced back to that herd.

Curly horses are increasing in popularity and in 1971, the American Bashkir Curly Registry was formed.

Curly horses usually have a kind temperament that makes them easy to train. Their height ranges 14.3 to 15 hh, and they can be any color. The most striking and unusual part of the Curly is their curled coat that is dense and thick in the winter and lesser in the summer. Weird enough, some Curly horses do not have ergots (small lump on hock), and for some people, who are allergic to horses, may not be allergic to the Curly horses. Some of these horses are born with a natural foxtrot or running-walk. Curly horses have ability for any equine sport, including jumping, dressage, and many forms of ranch work.

The Curly horse’s anatomic features include a heavy head and vivid eyes, and a wide length across the forehead. Their neck is small and bulked and muscular, and they have a steady structure of their body that presents them as large horses. Curly horses can withstand harsh and climatic conditions, for their thick coat in the winter keeps the warm, and they are suitable for many terrains, since their ancestors were wild horses. Some today are still in the wild, and there is an even population.
